The State of Mattress Hygiene in Hospitality: 2025 Global Housekeeping Survey Launches

For decades, hotels have worked hard to meet evolving hygiene expectations — from food safety certifications to air-quality checks and water testing.
Yet one area has consistently slipped through the cracks: the mattress.

While linens are changed daily, the mattress itself — where guests spend a third of their stay — is often left uncleaned for years. It silently accumulates sweat, dust mites, fungi, bacteria, and odours that no surface spray can remove.

As global awareness of sleep hygiene grows, and with travellers increasingly asking “how clean is my bed?”, this hidden gap can no longer be ignored.

Giving Housekeepers a Voice

To uncover the real picture, HygeiaSleep — the Global Authority on Mattress Hygiene — has launched the 2025 Global Housekeeping Survey.
This anonymous, worldwide study invites housekeepers, supervisors, and executive housekeepers to share what truly happens behind the scenes when it comes to mattress hygiene.

The survey asks key questions:

  • How often are mattresses sanitized or deep-cleaned?
  • Are any light or surface-level cleaning routines performed between guest stays?
  • What tools or equipment are available?
  • Do hotels have formal mattress hygiene policies in place?

The results will form the foundation of the 2025 Global Mattress Hygiene Report, a landmark publication highlighting the industry’s current practices and identifying opportunities for reform, training, and certification.

A Call for Transparency and Standards

Our goal is not to criticise — but to illuminate.
By gathering first-hand data from the people who see it every day — the housekeeping teams — we can provide the hospitality industry with the insights needed to build safer, healthier sleep environments for guests worldwide.

Just as food safety and fire safety are now mandatory, mattress hygiene deserves its place as a regulated hospitality standard.
